About Us

Who are we
Harambee House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working alongside communities in Savannah and across the Southeast U.S. to advance environmental justice, strengthen climate adaptation, build sustainable food systems, and create sustainable pathways to economic mobility for historically marginalized communities.
Vision Statement
A world where communities are empowered, culture is valued, environmental justice prevails, and peace and equity are realities for all.
Our Mission
To educate, inspire, organize and build the capacity of African Americans and other communities of color to create and sustain safe, economically vibrant, healthy neighborhoods that promote healthy living, wellness, environmental justice and green sustainability.
Our theory of change
- Our theory of change is rooted in the belief that...
- African American communities and other communities of color have the power to drive meaningful transformation
- When these communities are educated, they gain the knowledge needed to make informed decisions
- When they are equipped with the necessary tools and capacity to lead, they can take ownership of solutions
- When they are organized, they can collectively address challenges and advocate effectively
- When they are inspired, they are motivated to take action toward positive change
- This empowerment enables communities to transform their neighborhoods into safe, healthy, and environmentally just places to live, creating lasting change for current and future generations
Our Vision
- is a world where …
- African history and culture, human rights and environmental justice are valued and practiced;
- Community residents are empowered to speak in their own voice and are engaged in the public policy process;
- Adults take full responsibility for the personal, educational and spiritual development of future generations of youth and young adults;
- The community is engaged in creating and sustaining economic activities that are green and sustainable, and enrich the lives of the community families live, work and play in; communities free of toxins and other environmental health hazards; and peace and justice is a reality for ALL!
The Harambee House Pillars
Each pillar represents a pathway toward stronger more resilient empowered communities.
Unity
PILLAR 1
We believe collective progress begins with shared purpose. Unity means building bridges across generations, sectors, and communities to move forward together.
By fostering trust, collaboration, and mutual respect, we strengthen our ability to respond to challenges and create lasting change.
Community Power
PILLAR 2
Those closest to the challenges are closest to the solutions. Community Power means equipping residents with the knowledge, tools, and leadership opportunities needed to influence decisions that affect their lives.
We center local voices and cultivate the collective strength required to shape equitable systems and policies.
Sustainability
PILLAR 3
Sustainability is about protecting what sustains us—our air, water, land, and future generations.
We promote solutions that balance environmental protection, economic stability, and community well-being, ensuring that progress today does not compromise tomorrow.
Community Action
PILLAR 4
Real change requires action. We mobilize residents, partners, and leaders to advocate, organize, and implement practical solutions that address environmental and social challenges.
Through education, engagement, and collective organizing, we turn awareness into measurable impact.
Justice
PILLAR 5
Justice is the foundation of our work. We confront inequities that disproportionately impact historically marginalized communities and work to dismantle the systems that create environmental and economic harm.
Our goal is a future where safety, health, and opportunity are not privileges, but rights.
